The tokens are high density plastic which means they’re very smooth. The only thing negative I can offer about this game is that the pieces don’t lock together. The insert holds all of the pieces together quite well, without much shifting. Each tile is identically shaped, but comprised of differently illustrated hexes, and constructed of thick, sturdy cardboard. The components are top notch quality, from the dense, heavy discs (seriously, these things are awesome), to the hilariously marvelous illustrations of sheep belching, or showing their posteriors, or winking salaciously. To move, you take the selected number of sheep and move them in a straight line, until you can go no further. A turn consists of a player selecting one of their stacks of sheep and moving between 1 and all of the sheep in that stack (always leaving a single sheep to occupy your place). Play moves clockwise beginning with the start player. The winner of the game is the player who has the most occupied spaces. When the pasture is finished, players place their sheep in a single stack of 16 tokens, then compete to own the most sections of the gaming area by moving parts stacks (their sheep) from space to space. Each move involves a reassessment of the pasture and the possible moves of your opponents. It is entirely possible to get shut down early in the game if you choose poorly. There is a lot to think about here, starting with your initial placement. At that point, players count how many pasture hexes they control. The game ends when only one player can make a legal move.
The idea is to control as many hex spaces as you can and block your opponents so they can’t move. Players with multiple stacks may only move from one of the stacks. As the game progresses, there are generally several smaller stacks of sheep of each color. A player can move a single sheep or a stack of sheep as long as at least one sheep is left behind. Each turn after the initial placement, each player must move at least one of their sheep tokens in a straight line until they have to stop-either by running into the edge of the pasture or by bumping into another sheep. Once the pasture is set, the players take their 16 sheep tokens and place them in a single stack at the edge of the pasture. The combinations are practically infinite and you can construct some truly bizarre playing areas. Players take turns placing the pasture tiles so that they connect. The game starts with the construction of the pasture. The rules fit on a tiny slip of paper and once you have read them you will never need them again. As is the hallmark of most Blue Orange Games, the pieces are of the highest quality and the art is fun. Battle Sheep combines an area capture mechanic with a variable board that changes the contested pasture every time you play.
